My name is Casimir van der Post and I am a master student from the Technical University Delft. The project I will be working on will be about characterizing the optical properties of detector materials such as PTFE (polytetrafluoretheen). Because there is no such experiment as of jet at NIKHEF, I will build the experiment according to my own design and design requirements for future research. The building also requires me to commission the whole setup by remeasuring data done in a similar experiment at the university of Munich.
Starting point
My predecessor Jeroen van den Borgh already did some research into the needs and restrictions of the experiment. From these different design requirements came a modular vacuum chamber and a first design for a sample holder.
The design requirements:
- Sample chamber requirements
- Being modular for additions in the future
- Oxygen free environment
- Rotationally manipulate the sample and the detectors from outside the sample chamber
- Ease of access for placing and replacing of samples
- Ability to configure the chamber for full intensity calibration measurement
- Ability to measure reflectivity and transmissivity of a sample
- With material selection outgassing must be considered
- Sample holder
- A sample can be placed without touching the front or back of the sample
- The sample holder can hold two samples
- The sample can be cooled in future experiments
