December 2011 "Our R&D outing SWOT had as one of the weaknesses the planning of our testbeams! We (R&D staff) all agree that a go/no go decision should be taken 2 months before the actual testbeam takes place (and not running into a wall the week before :- ). Two months in advance we consider if our planning is still realistic and if all the detectors & hardware are available."

Things to learn from the GridPix testbeam in Oct 2012

  1. Setup:
    • have it ready much earlier!
    • test the whole telescope and whole detector chain
    • TDC for time tagging to distinguish multiple events per frame/trigger
    • for LabView: log more often if values are higher than a threshold (to keep track of peaks and unusual behavior)
    • add log for Relaxd modules with time of crashes (to combine with peaks in LabView control)
    • remotely controllable stages of the detectors (such that no access is required to change angles); (master) project for mechanical department?
    • for alignment: laser with water level
    • wooden crate for safe transport of telescope (to avoid dead space in car/van)
  2. Shifts:
    • have a (8h) shift plan ready at the beginning of the period
    • make sure there are enough competent shiftleaders (not only one person to cover whole days)
    • do training shifts for new shifters to operate the setup, DAQ, and remote LabView control
  3. Data:
    • have (fast analysis) software ready to check incoming data on the fly
    • read in data directly in binary format
    • online analysis (in between beam spills)
    • sort of digital logbook that automatically creates folders for new runs combining data from LabView
