Wireless Windows settings

This article describes how to setup your wireless connection to the eduroam or the Nikhef wireless network

Adding the Network

  • Click on the left-to-right ascending bars on the bottom right corner of the screen
  • Click Open Network and Sharing Center
  • Select Manage Wireless Networks

  • Click Add to add a Wireless Network
  • Click Manually create a network profile

  • Enter the field Network Name
  • eduroam for the eduroam wireless network
  • NIKHEF (all capitals) for the Nikhef wireless network
  • Set Security Type to WPA2-Enterprise
  • Set Encryption Type to AES
  • Turn on Check box: Start this connection automatically
  • Click Next

Configuring the Wireless Connection

  • Click Change Connection Settings
  • Turn on Check box: Connect to this network automatically
  • [eduroam network only] Turn on Check box: Connect to a more preferred network if available. (This is to connect to the nikhef network instead if both eduroam and nikhef are available)
  • Click Security Tab

  • Set Network authentication method: Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)
  • Turn on Checkbox: Remember my credentials for this connection each time I'm logged on
  • Click Settings
  • Turn on Checkbox: Validate Server Sertificate
  • Turn on Checkbox: Connect to these servers:
  • Enter line: wireless.nikhef.nl
  • In the Selection box: Trusted Root Certification Authorities. Check on: AddTrust External CA root
  • Turn on Checkbox: Do not prompt user to authorize new servers or trusted certification authorities
  • Select Authentication Method: Secured password (EAP-MSCHAPv2)
  • Turn on Checkbox: Enable Fast Reconnect
  • Turn on Checkbox: Enable Identity Privacy and enter: anonymous
  • Click Configure
  • Click OFF: Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). then press OK
  • Press OK again

  • Click Advanced settings on the security tab
  • Turn on Checkbox: specify authentication and select: User authentication
  • Click save credentials
  • Enter your creditials
  • yourusername@nikhef.nl (important to add: @nikhef.nl!)
  • your password
  • Click Ok to return to the Advanced settings screen
  • Click Ok to return to the Wireless Network Properties screen
  • Click Ok to finish configuring the settings

Checking the connection

After a few moments the NIKHEF or eduroam network should connect automatically and it should look like below.
